Updates

Following are some pictures of Greyhounds in their new homes. Please email your pictures to us and we will try to publish them all. If there is a short story behind the picture please include that as well.

Bertie

Dear Cheryl and team,

Just a note to let you know that Burt now Bertie Wooster has settled into his new home magnificently well. He loves his new soft padded bed and can spend hours curled up sleeping in there.

Housetraining was easy, within a few days he was watering all my plants in the garden for me!

His new pal Jasmine has started to teach him how to play ball with her and she is happy to share all her toys with him. He chose a large soft emu out of the toy basket and he keeps it in his bed with him all the time!

He loves the local parks and doesn't mind being on his lead one little bit, he has a lovely time.

Bertie is so affectionate and has learnt how to ask for tummy tickles when we pass by his bed!

He watches everything we do and is learning all the time about household life. It only took him three days to be confident about going up and down our stairs, I put a towel under his belly to support him whilst going down the stairs at first.

He's an absolute hit with everybody whilst out on walks; people are very curious about his colouring and breed and he's a super ambassador for retired greyhounds :)

Best wishes

Julie

Dreamer

Hi

Just a quick update on Dreamer...she is settling in really well and enjoying sharing our sofas with us! we have been having 2 walks a day in our local park where she has been meeting lots of other furry friends and has shown a bit of a keen interest in the resident ducks!! apart from an incident with a toilet roll (Dreamer trying to do the andrex puppy) and a bit of whining she has been getting along fine and enjoying having a lot of strokes from us and everyone we meet!

Mel

Hi,

We adopted Melody (then Bertha) November 2006.

We braved the cold for the Riverside sponsored walk 6th April 2008 we couldn’t believe how thick the snow was when we were leaving home and it was freezing in the cold wind when we got there, but at least we could feel we’d earned our sponsor money.

We have just returned from our second holiday to Cornwall with her, Melody was great on the journey settling down and putting up with only an hour’s break on the way down and less on the way back due to the rain. We visited several dog friendly places when we were there, Mel didn’t like the noises the Seals at the Gweek seal sanctuary made, but enjoyed looking round Cornwall’s Crealy adventure park.

We also took her into a pub on Bodmin Moor (The Old Inn) while we ate and she settled down happily on the Dart mat to sleep. Shortly after this the Pub’s cat came and sat about 4 feet away in front of the fire! Mel didn’t see her luckily but it did give me heart failure whenever it looked like it was going to move in our direction. The staff said even if she was licked on the nose she would be alright; I explained I thought that wouldn’t be the problem, Mel’s definitely not Cat Friendly!

The previous year we stayed at the same place and Mel struggled with the slippery floor so this year we tried dog shoes! Mel hated them and had them off in seconds so not a success (Even the picture of the dog on the box looked fed up). Never mind, we also tried a harness to help her up and down stairs and this was more successful helping to take the weight and make her more confident.

A year ago I started taking Mel to Dog Training (Sandra, Colliewobbles Fun Dog Club 01732 351178) once a week and last week she achieved her Silver Kennel Club Good Citizenship award. This involved amongst other things a two-minute stay a recall to me and allowing the judge to eat Jaffa cakes right in front of her.

All the Best Colin, Rose, Gemma & Mel

Gabby

Hello,

Just thought I’d send you another update on our poor Gabby.

At the start of March she had a lump removed, which thankfully was a benign tumour. Her snitches took longer to heal and the wound would open up each time she stretched, so she ended up on antibiotics to prevent any infection. She HATED the buster collar and refused to move when wearing it, to the point that she would shake all over where she needed to sit down, but no matter how much coaxing she still would not move! So I gave up with it and got some belly bandages which did look a little like she was wearing a baby grow but she was so much happier and they stopped her stitches becoming infected.

A week after the nurse had managed to remove the last stitch, we were back at the vets for blood tests as she had suddenly become very depressed, lethargic, gone off her food, and was drinking masses so peeing everywhere! After a few days of countless blood tests and a few scans, she had a biopsy on her liver which revealed chronic hepatitis. The vet has prescribed steroids, a special diet (which she hates!) and a pile of other tablets for her but feels the hepatitis is too advanced to be cured. The best we can do is fill her full of medication to slow it down, test her blood regularly to see if the dose needs adjusting and see how long she can hold out for.

We are all totally devastated but are trying to be positive and give her loads of love and affection.

Hope you are all ok.
